Part 1: Charles Dickens

  • Born on 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsmouth, England
  • His father was John Dickens. His mother was Elizabeth Dickens
  • His father was put in jail for debt, so Charles had to work in a factory to make money for the family when he was only twelve
  • He was mostly self- educated, but he did sped one year at William Giles' school and three years at Wellington House

Early Careers:

  • Taken out of school and becomes apprentice of an attorney
  • Becomes freelance reporter at Doctor's Commons Courts
  • Reports during Reform Bill (see Reform Bill in French Rev. section)

  • Married Katherine Hogarth
  • Had ten kids

Major Works:

  • First novel was The Pickwick Papers

Part 2: French Revolution


Causes:
  • King Louis XVI needed more money, but he didn't tax the people.
  • Paris got very upset with this, so they formed a mob, and stormed the Bastille fortress (prison).

Events:
  • Radicals took control of the government
  • Radicals leader was Marat
  • Radials outlawed slavery, allowed free public education for boys and girls, gave man the right to vote, in forced the metric system, and abolished debt prison. (saying in prison until you could pay off debt)

Conditions:
  • Committee of Public Safety was made up of the Radicals
  • Their goal was to keep everyone safe
  • They killed anyone who didn't follow the changes that they made (above bullet)
  • Led by Marat, Danton, & Robespierre
  • When Marat was killed, it ended the Committee of Public Safety, but started the Reign of Terror
  • During the Reign of Terror, the economy was declining
  • There was chaos and killing everywhere

  • The Reign of Terror was when Robespierre killed anyone who went against the Radicals
  • The Reign of Terror was like the Committee of Public Safety, except more people were killed.
  • 20,000 - 40,000 people were killed using the guillotine
  • The Reign of Terror ended because:
    • France's economy was suffering
    • Robespierre was guillotined (face up)
